Declaration of the European Youth: Solidarity with Catalan students!

As a consequence of the implementation of Bolonian Plan in Spain, the students of Catalonia are leading big demonstrations in order to stop the process, and instead start talking about the public university model that Catalan society needs. The deep financial deficiencies of Catalan public universities and the Bolonian Plan's lack of honesty has generated majority support for the students movement, which has shown the ability to develop a pacificist and integrative attitude.

Several demonstrations and faculty occupations forced the University of Barcelona (the main University in Catalonia) to organize, on February 26th, a referendum where students were asked the following question: "Does the Bolonian process have to be stopped in order to start discussing a new process for public universities?". 91.3% of the students voted YES, which legitimized the struggle for a public, free, and good quality university.

Instead of being answered politically, the movement's strength has been met with repression. he police's violent entrance into the occupied university, and the repression of subsequent demonstrations, has resulted in the injury of hundreds of students. The aim of the repression is to put an end to pacifist resistance against the privatization of university by discouraging the students to continue the struggle a struggle that endangers the Capital's aspirations.

As European youth, we agree with the Catalan students' claims. We consider the struggle of Catalan youth to be our struggle as well. For that reason, we show our solidarity with the Catalan movement, and our commitment for building together a public education.

Arrel de la implantació del Pla Bolonya a l'estat espanyol, els i les estudiants de Catalunya s'estan mobilitzant per tal d'aturar el procés i iniciar un debat entorn al model de universitat pública que necessita la societat catalana. Les greus deficiències del finançament de les Universitats catalanes i la manca de transparència del procés d'implantació de Bolonya a Catalunya, sumades a l'actitud pacífica i la voluntat integradora del moviment han permès que les reivindicacions estudiantils comptin amb un suport majoritari.

Fruit de les mobilitzacions i les nombroses tancades d'estudiants , la Universitat de Barcelona (la Universitat amb més estudiants de Catalunya) es va veure obligada a realitzar un referèndum el 26 de febrer en què es preguntava a l'estudiantat "S’ha de paralitzar l’aplicació de l’espai europeu d’educació superior, per iniciar un procés de debat sobre el futur de la universitat pública?". El 91,3% dels estudiants van votar-hi a favor, demostrant la legitimitat dels i les estudiants que lluiten per una universitat pública gratuita i de qualitat.

Lluny de respondre a les aspiracions dels i les estudiants, la resposta a la força del moviment ha estat la força de la repressió: en primer lloc mitjançant el violent desallotjament dels i les tancades a la Universitat de Barcelona i en segon lloc dissolent les múltiples manifestacions multitudinàries a cops de porra, també multitudinàries, deixant un balanç de centenars de contussionats. La repressió té com a objectiu estigmatitzar la pacífica resistència a la mercantilització de la universitat, desencoratjar als i les estudiants a continuar mobilitzant-se i acabar amb un moviment estudiantil que posa en perill les aspiracions del capital.

Els i les joves dels països d'Europa fem nostres les reivindicacions dels i les estudiants de Catalunya, la lluita de la joventut catalana és, també, la nostra lluita. Per això volem mostrar la nostra solidaritat amb el moviment estudiantil català, i manifestar el nostre compromís a construir plegats i plegades una educació pública.
